Basic Textual Analysis of a Music Video in Relation to Andrew Goodwin's Theory!!

The music video I did my analysis on was Live While We're Young by One Direction.

Gnere Characteristics:
5 young good looking boys, lots of girls running and dancing about, set in a party/festival scene. Not particularly voyeuristic towards the female body.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?
They're messing around having fun causing havoc, links towards to the lyrics 'crazy crazy crazy till we see the sun'.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?
Niall (blonde haired band member) playing guitar on the guitar rifs on the tracks.

Are there close ups of the artist and star image motifs?
There are close ups of all 5 boys, seperately, during each of their respective solo's.

Are there intertextual references?
There us a continuing reference to a festival throughout the entire music video, as it is the theme.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory!!

In lesson we learnt about the theorist Andrew Goodwin. The key parts of his theory are:
1. Music videos demonsrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in a rock video, dance routine in a pop video)
2. There is a relationship the lyrics and the visuals.
3. There is a relationship the music and the visuals.
4. Need for close ups to sell the artists from the record label, artists may develop motifs.
5. Frequent notions of looking (screens within screens) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes and other music videos).
